A Homemade Finding Nemo Birthday Cake

Hi, my name is Robin.
My daughter was a big fan of the movie "Finding Nemo" and wanted to have a Nemo birthday cake.
I didn't want to buy a ready-made one from the supermarket because kids' supermarket cakes aren't generally very tasty (or wholesome), and I didn't want to buy a cake mold that would get used just once.
Instead I took two coat hangers, straightened them out, bent each of them into the shape of a fish (as Nemo-like as I could make them), and then ran aluminum foil around them so they were about 2 inches apart. This became the sides of a cake pan. I then spread another piece of foil on top of the sides and pressed it down so I had a proper cake pan with no major gaps (since the batter is a thick fluid rather than a liquid, you can get away with small gaps). This was done on a baking tray; I poured a cake batter in and baked it.
The cake came out great - after flipping it I had no trouble getting the tin foil off. (This was a while ago, as you can imagine from the movie character chosen - so I can't recall whether I'd had the foresight to butter the tin foil first).
We iced it with streaks of white and orange homemade icing (buttercream, of course) and served it on the baking platter since there was no way to move it onto a plate without it falling apart. The kids loved it!
I later made several other kids' birthday cakes based on cartoon or movie characters, using either the coat hanger technique, or just taking two round cakes and carving bits of them up to make whatever character shape was needed.
Once you've covered it in icing, you can't tell that it's made up of little sections of cakes!
From the party girl: Robin, what a great idea! I'd love to see pictures, if you have any. Thanks for submitting!
