A Wine Themed Birthday Cake Design
by Lorelie Carvey
Vintage 1979 & 1982
I made this wine themed birthday cake design recently for two women who are best friends, and who happen to share the same birthday. They let me go wild and said to do whatever I wanted, so I had a lot of fun with it. The cake was a chocolate buttermilk cake with a Kahlua butter cream filling, frosted with Ghiradelli chocolate ganache, then decorated with chocolate leaves, which I made out of chocolate modeling paste. The grapes, vines, apples, and smaller grape leaves are made of fondant, and dusted with gold dust and the wine bottle are also fondant. Once dried I painted the bottles with food colors to make labels. Each bottle has the year of the girls birthdays (1979 and 1982) Casey and Courtney were very happy with this cake. They told me that all of the guests were peeling off the large chocolate grape leaves and picking the grapes and eating them along with their wine. And I heard from a couple of the guests that the cake was THE BEST they had ever had. That makes all of the hard work worth it!!! From the party girl: Lorelie, way to go! The design is so unique and pretty! I love it!
