Basic Yellow Cake Recipe
A basic yellow cake recipe is the perfect foundation for any birthday cake, and goes well with just about any flavor of frosting.
This recipe is a piece of cake to throw together for even the newest of bakers, and uses ingredients that you most likely already have in your pantry.
It's also incredibly moist and delicious, and will most likely become a favorite in your cake recipe collection!
What You'll Need for this Basic Yellow Cake Recipe:
- 1 cup butter, softened
- 1 1/2 cups sugar
- 4 large eggs
- 3 cups cake flour (sifted)
- 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup milk
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Beat butter at medium speed with an electric mixer until creamy; gradually add sugar, beating well. Add eggs, one at a time, beating after each addition.
Combine flour, baking powder, and salt; add to butter mixture alternately with milk, beginning and ending with flour mixture. Mix at low speed after each addition until blended. Stir in vanilla.
Pour batter into 3 greased and floured 9-inch round cake pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 20-22 minutes, or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean.
Cool in pans on wire racks 10 minutes; remove from pans, and cool completely on wire racks.
The Icing on the Cake:
Just about any flavor of frosting will be delicious on this cake, but chocolate and coconut are good choices.
If you plan on turning this cake into a birthday masterpiece, buttercream frosting is the best choice because of it's dense consistency.
