Zebra Sweet 16 Cake

Zebra Cake
As we all know the girls are crazy for zebra print right now. I found a few zebra cake ideas searching online to get started, but this cake is all Valerie (my daughter). The cake itself...under the frosting...is a "zebra cake" (chocolate and vanilla). You can find numerous homemade recipes and instructions for this online. Of course I adapted it and made my own version. The basic idea is that you use a white cake mix and then reserve a portion of it and add cocoa powder to make a chocolate mix. Then, in a prepared cake pan, you alternate spoonfuls of batter into the center of the pan repeating until you reach the 2/3 full mark. Because I was making multiple cakes to layer, I chose to purchase a box of white cake mix and a rich dark chocolate cake mix. After preparing the cake batter as the box directed, I used the method of alternating batter and ended up with a pretty and delicious zebra striped cake. The frosting is buttercream, and I used chocolate frosting tinted with black for the zebra stripes. All of the stripes were piped on free-hand. The bow is molded from ready-made fondant tinted pink. I recommend making the bow ahead of time; if using toothpicks to support it, let it air dry and then remove the toothpicks after placing it on the cake. (I had trouble getting the toothpicks out as I did not let it air dry enough, as you can see them in the photo).
